Saturday Scraps – South Carolina Wrestling Rising Together
We are thrilled to introduce Saturday Scraps, an open wrestling practice designed to unite athletes and coaches from across South Carolina. Our mission is to build a strong wrestling community that emphasizes collaboration, friendship, and mutual support among wrestlers of all ages, from elementary through high school.
At Saturday Scraps, we recognize that developing healthy relationships and camaraderie among young wrestlers is essential for long-term success in the sport. We welcome athletes of all levels, including elementary and middle school wrestlers, alongside high school competitors. This is an incredible opportunity for younger athletes to learn from experienced coaches and seasoned wrestlers while also forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
We understand that during the wrestling season, most of our high school and middle school athletes are heavily engaged with their commitments and may not have much time for weekend activities. Therefore, during this time, we will focus a majority of our efforts on supporting our elementary students the future of SC wrestling. This approach ensures that they receive the attention and training they need to develop their skills and passion for the sport.
However, during the off-season, it is critical for our high school & middle school wrestlers to come together and sharpen each other, regardless of whether they have won a state title or not. This is the time to focus on improvement, as iron sharpens iron. For those with aspirations of wrestling at the collegiate level and wrestling nationally, this collaborative environment is essential. By training together, sharing techniques, and pushing each other to excel, our wrestlers will be better prepared for the challenges ahead.
To ensure that our wrestlers receive the attention they need, we are striving to create a coach-to-wrestler ratio of 1 to 4. This allows coaches to spend ample time focused on developing the techniques of the wrestlers in the room. Many times, when there are too many wrestlers and not enough coaches, kids can fall through the cracks. By maintaining this ratio, we can provide personalized guidance and support to help each athlete reach their full potential.
All coaches involved at the outset will collaborate to create a unified curriculum that will remain consistent throughout the year. We believe it is crucial to focus specifically on the basics of wrestling, helping our athletes execute these fundamentals with perfection. Rather than teaching a vast library of moves, our emphasis will be on mastering the essential techniques that form the foundation of successful wrestling at the highest level. By honing these basics, we will prepare our wrestlers for greater challenges and success in the future.
To make participation accessible for all, we will host these events at various locations throughout the state and at different club facilities. This approach allows wrestlers from all regions of South Carolina to come together and benefit from the training. Eventually, we aim to establish South Carolina national practices, bringing everyone together under one roof for an unparalleled training experience.
Moreover, we believe that involving coaches from various clubs is vital to the success of our initiative. Each coach and club has unique insights and expertise to offer, and bringing all of them together will enhance the learning experience for all wrestlers present. This collaborative coaching environment will foster a culture of shared knowledge and innovation, ultimately benefiting the athletes and the state as a whole.
